All aboard the FitBit hype train!

Sabriena and I both ended up buying FitBit devices today. I’ve heard of several people who had good experiences with them, and one who’d had a semi-negative experience (in that while walking a dog, the dog leash slid down and managed to break the irreplaceable wristband for it). While looking online for prices, we noted that OfficeWorks had the best price for the Charge HR - fully $30 cheaper than Dick Smith’s, in Horsham. In town, we decided to window shop anyway - and DSE had the same price! Unfortunately, they were all out.

Over to Harvey Norman on a whim, and sure enough they were selling them for $199… but I decided to be brave and risk a hard sell, and approached a salesman and it turns out they’ll price match. When he checked DSE’s website, it turns out they have the same price as the in-store deal on their site, so they price matched it for us.

Upon getting them home, we learned they come with no charge. Okay, that’s not the end of the world - plug them in. I started setting mine up, and it had to update the firmware. Sabriena sets hers up, and I’m not sure if it’s a coincidence or related, but it interrupted the firmware update for mine. Hers set up and synced with no effort, but I had a hell of a time getting it to recover from the botched firmware update.

The manual is almost no help, and the instructions for resetting it didn’t work as advertised. Finally, and I’m not sure how, I managed to get the desktop app to recognize the watch and apply the update correctly. It took approximately 45 minutes, during which I was thinking the device was going to have to go back and get swapped out, as it’s apparently not an uncommon fault that many people don’t get it to recover from.

Now it’s working as it’s supposed to, so we’ll see how it goes over the next few weeks.
