New Router Woes

Today’s the day our ADSL is supposed to be turned on (of which I’m sceptical, but regardless), so yesterday we went and picked up a modem/router so we’d be ready if it came on in the morning. We opted for a Netgear N600 (specifically DGND3700v2), based on the good experience with the client model of same.

It turned out to be a mistake, we almost immediately ran into problems with the media server function of it. A quick check of the Netgear forums and Whirlpool, and it turns out it’s a recurring theme with this specific model (and it’s predecessor) and it’s not even fixed in the latest firmware. Fuck it, it’s going back.

Exchanged it for the next model up, a D6200, and so far no issues with it. We also have the added advantage of the AC1200 network, which is basically future-proofing because we (to my knowledge) have no devices that support it. The difference in build quality between this device and the last one is immediately apparent, and I’m looking forward to seeing how it performs once the connection is on.
