Scavenged a few more posts…

So today I learned the cyber-squatting fuckwits still holding my old vanity domain have switched their system up and it no longer produces a robots.txt denying everything. This means that are free to serve up the archived versions of my site.

Tragically, they didn’t appear to grab much more than the index page for a few years between 1999 and 2002, and to make things worse for a time there I committed the cardinal sin of using frames. I did manage to pilfer a couple posts, which I mirrored here for posterity, from around 2002, up until right before I lost it.

I went to take a look at the “this domain is for sale” page again, to make my usual low-ball offer to them (I’m maybe willing to part with a hundred bucks or two to get my old domain back) and they cleverly modified the form to indicate that they weren’t interested in anything less than $5k for it.

While I’m sure it’s age is appreciable (it was re-registered in 2002 but prior to that the domain existed clear back until about 1997 or so, back when domains cost something like $70 a year and you had to edit text files and email them to the registrar), and my old mate DigitalAvatar probably thought he was doing me a huge favour forwarding his substantial array of backlinks my way until CJB networks folded up a few years ago, it’s still a bit flattering the idea that an old vanity domain from a no-name hacker in the 90s is worth four figures.

I’m not that vain to pass over that much cash for a domain.
