Neo Geo

In September of 2019 I fulfilled a childhood dream and bought a Neo Geo arcade cabinet along with a pile of games. The cabinet itself is an LAI “Lowboy”, serial number 36522. It came with a Neo Geo MVS-1A board (though unusually, it does not have a socketed ROM chip, it’s soldered, which will make installing a UniBIOS slightly more difficult). The board’s serial number is 810383. It has a Mitsubishi CRT, 510UKB22 (22" nominal, probably more like 20" playable area). When I got it the coin counter was around about 121860, and then I played it on freeplay a few months prior to fixing the coin mech.

Games

I scored a number of games with it, mostly fighting games which, other than Samurai Shodown series, I don’t really care too much for. But it is a fairly good start to a modest collection, and I bought Metal Slug immediately afterwards. Here’s the current collection:

  • 2020 Super Baseball
  • 8 Man
  • Aggressors of Dark Kombat
  • Art of Fighting
  • Baseball Stars Professional
  • Blue’s Journey
  • Fatal Fury
  • Fatal Fury Special
  • Metal Slug
  • Ragnagard
  • Riding Hero
  • Samurai Shodown
  • Samurai Shodown II
  • Savage Reign
  • Super Sidekicks
  • Super Sidekicks II
  • World Heroes 2
  • World Heroes 2 Jet
  • World Heroes Perfect

I checked each cart that did not have an in-tact seal and compared the boards to MVS Scans and they all check out as legitimate SNK boards (however some have the serial number cut out, which is curious), so I’m pretty satisfied. I do worry it’s the start of a very expensive habit though.
