Zoo!

A week or two ago I decided to do something about my extreme underperformance when it comes to taking time off work (I’m literally not even at 1:1 on my federally-mandated public holidays, I’m so bad at this) and scheduled to take Friday off for Sabriena’s birthday. I figured we’d hang out and whatnot. But then I thought to secretly ask Duncan if he could take it off as well - with him starting VCE there’s a lot of CATs (Common Assessment Tasks, things he must do in order to pass), so he would check with his teachers on Tuesday. He came home from Tuesday and gave me the thumbs-up when his Mum wasn’t looking, and we were off to the races.

We were thinking that maybe we’d take her down to Melbourne Zoo, as she had mentioned a while back that we’ve not been in a long time. That’s not the sort of trip you spring on someone morning-of though, so we came clean on Tuesday evening after dinner about our plans. After some thinking, we decided that Melbourne was a bit far, we haven’t organized a pet-sitter yet, let’s just go to the Hall’s Gap Zoo instead, it’s closer and smaller and basically a morning-trip. Sure, let’s do that!

So off we went, and had a good wander around, being once again molested by the deer or whatever they are that know exactly what a paper bag full of animal feed in your pocket sounds like. Positively enjoyable, perfectly-sized Zoo experience.

Once we were done with that, we figured we’d go into Hall’s Gap proper and have a look for some food. Last time we went we wanted to try the restaraunt in the creek (I think it’s called Flame Brothers or something?), but they required bookings due to the holidays. Today was not a holiday, so we decided to have a shot at a walk-in, and they were actually probably only about half-capacity so we got straight in.

Everyone enjoyed what we got, and we got to watch the Currawongs and Cockatoos stealing food left over from people eating at the al fresco tables, so we got dinner and a show.

Lazy drive back to rescue our dog from the clutches of being home alone, and we ended up skipping dinner because lunch was huge.
