Windows Update Sucks

For about five days now, Windows 10 has consistenly failed to update from build 14955 to 14965 - each morning I’d get up, and it’d be stuck on the updating screen at 87%. Frustratingly, it would download another multi-gigabyte update again after each failed attempt.

Most annoyingly, despite the fact they fixed the “you can only use your PC for 8 hours” thing, it’d still try and download the updates during times when we want to use the internet for interactive things. Microsoft’s update servers are more than capable of saturating our downstream pipe, which means a poor experience for everyone in the house. I’m glad we can set the “active hours” to a more reasonable choice now, but why can’t I pause/defer updates until those hours? Why can’t I control the bandwidth of updates?

Anyway, after about a week of waking up to find my computer in an unusable state, I went looking for a fix. The fix that worked for me is rather easy:

  • Open the start menu and type “troubleshoot” in the search box.
  • Open the “Troubleshooting” control panel.
  • Click “Fix problems with Windows Update”
  • Follow the prompts and allow it to escalate privileges.
  • When it’s finished, start the fucking updates downloading again.
