Grumbling about desktop updates

I’ve been wanting to build a decent gaming desktop for a while, but travelling around in the van has meant - unfortunately - that a laptop was my best bet. Since enrolling in school, however, I’ve endeavoured to be at home as much as I can, which is making a desktop sound better and better.

I specced out a modest desktop system, but I couldn’t quite bring myself to pull the $~900AUD trigger. I then toyed with the idea of simply buying the biggest, fastest AM3 CPU that would fit in our existing motherboard (to replace the AMD X2 250 that’s in it), then buy an SSD and an up-to-date GPU and call it a day.

Unfortunately, the board that is in it is an Alvorix RS880, which supports a maximum TDP of 85w. All the processors that fit in the board and are under that TDP are absolute trash, and most of them go for around $200USD on eBay. So it looks like I’ll have to buy most of a desktop anyway.
