I hate Skype. I mean, I really hate it.
However, I'm pretty much stuck using it - so when I got my new laptop, I installed Skype for Windows 8 on it and it was... cute. The two taskbars thing on 8 and 8.1 is still a UI tragedy (while everyone is whining about the full screen start menu, which is now "not that bad" as of 8.1), but there are a host of other problems with it.
There appears to be no out of the box way to make it start up when Windows does. It doesn't seem to stay connected behind our proxy/firewall (the desktop version functions fine). The tying of Windows' accounts system to Windows 8.1 apps means I can't use my old Skype account, because it's tied to my old MSN account which was tied to an old Hotmail account - I created a new "Live" account for the laptop for security reasons, and I have no way of merging the old stuff.
So last night I cracked the shits and installed the desktop version, and I think I'm going to take this one step further: I'm going to excise all the Windows 8-style applications from my laptop and replace them with good old fashioned Desktop-style apps instead.
