Big power outage

Last night I had just crawled into bed when there was a big flash, followed by the telltale combination of a “boom and a buzz” that gave me flashbacks to when the transformer blew out outside our shop in Sacramento. In that occasion, a squirrel had climbed up and short-circuited it somehow - we found the charred remains of the squirrel down the bottom of the pole, with his eyes bugged out.

Then everything went black… extremely black. A neighbour later said that apparently the entire town was knocked-out temporarily, and it’s amazing how much light pollution there is at night to help you see around your own house, without it it’s next to impossible to navigate.

It turned out a car collided with a power pole just up the street, taking out the pole and dropping a wire. I don’t know if they had to replace the transformer or not, as I didn’t stay up all night to watch the festivities. They had the power back on by 7:30-ish this morning, so I suppose kudos to the workers for spending the entire night getting everything turned back on.

I think they had to replace the pole, there was a pole truck just next to our driveway and it looks like there’s a brand new cement pole up the street a little ways.
