Gas bill discrepancy

We got our first gas bill in the mail today, a whopping $120! How is that possible? We’ve used the heater for maybe six hours before summer started to kick in, there are no other gas appliances and the supply tariffs only account for about $25 of the bill. If this is accurate, we’re in for a world of hurt come winter!

I wrote up a quick spreadsheet to calculate the bill and work out where everything came from when a thought struck me… what if they didn’t read the meter? They’re supposed to read it before we moved in, and it turns out that was the case. Luckily, I took photos of both the electricity and the gas meter on the day we moved in, so we had a rough idea of where we’d stand.

On the phone to our provider, and spoke to a “Carmen” at about 4:15PM. She had to speak to a supervisor and call back, but she called back about 5 minutes later and said we’d get an amended bill mid-next-week, of about $31.37 - a pretty big difference.

At least now I have a spreadsheet so when we start using the heater again we can forecast roughly how much it costs per day to run it.
