Suburban monster?

So we got our Oldsmobile a while back, so I’ve been scouring the internet, reading forums, trying to learn as much as I can about the modification I want to do to the ‘burban since it’s not our daily driver anymore.

My thinking is that it’s never going to be good on gas. If I want gas mileage out of it, I should sell it and buy a stationwagon. It’s a heavy-duty tow-pig, which we’ll probably use maybe twice a year or so for big trips where everyone goes, every so often for hauling stuff, and should one of the other vehicles get stuck in the snow… to pull it out and bring it home.

It’s the last thing that got me thinking – all wheel drive would be great to have. The interchangeability of Chevy trucks is great – it’s realistically not that much work to get a 4×4 front end under a 2×4 Suburban. The best part is that parts and donor vehicles are ridiculously cheap out here because of the age of the vehicles we’re talking about. I’ve been scouring Craig’s List for dead Suburbans, Trucks, and RVs – anything that might have usable parts that can be had for next to nothing.

I haven’t bought anything yet, I’m still in the planning stages.. I just wanna know what I need, so when I see the perfect donor vehicle that can be had this weekend only if I come over with a case of beer for the owner and pull it out of a field. :D
