Okay so my truck’s out of action for now, and my wife wanted some stuff from various grocery stores so we decided to catch a ride with Norm and Pam to Walmart and a few other places. Somewhere along the line, Sabs and Norm start arguing about video piracy, and about how it was wrong because it was driving the price of DVDs up.
Yes Norm, those DVDs you get for $5 in the bins at Walmart could be $4 if it weren’t for those assholes at PiratbyrĂ„n. Personally my feelings are that I don’t really buy DVDs, and I don’t really watch movies. Heck, I don’t even really watch TV. We probably go to the movie theaters about once a year, and we probably buy under 5 movies a year, usually around Christmas time. My wife downloads a few things here and there, but not much – and truth be told if all the illegitimate BitTorrent sites were to suddenly go down we probably just wouldn’t watch any of them.
The last DVD we bought? The Matrix – That also happens to be a movie I pirated about 5 years ago, and my wife also pirated The Simpsons Movie only to buy it on DVD for the kids a few months later. I’m sure it’s pretty obvious that pirate activity in our household has no effect on our movie purchasing behaviour… but oh no, Norm thinks it’s evil and because the fact that he spends at least $50 a month on movies and he could be saving 10% of that if only those nasty pirates would go away!
So as we’re leaving, he crunches into someone’s car in the parking lot, adding another dent to his truck like notches on some college prep’s belt. When my mother in law asked if he wasn’t going to stop and leave his number, he dismissed the idea. So hey, apparently it’s perfectly okay to go causing a couple hundred bucks to someone personally, as long as you don’t fuck a multi-million dollar industry out of a couple bucks while you’re doing it.
Was: Twitter: bump! so norm just hit someone’s car in the parking lot and isn’t gonna leave a number.
but yet it’s morally wrong to download movies
