According to the WordPress developer’s blog, the PHP inside all WordPress themes has to be GPL. You can sell the images and the CSS, of course but what’s funny is most of the images/css is given away free with so-called “Premium” themes… then you buy the “Premium” version if you don’t want to have to fudge with stuff every time, and you want a fancy interface and whatnot.
I kind of figured this would happen, and it’s actually one of the chief things I dislike about the GPL – it means if you want to make any money using GPL software you have to walk a fine line between providing a service and providing the software.
I guess my wife and my dreams of doing nothing but selling themes for WordPress, while we chill back with our laptops on our pool floats lounges are shot to hell now.
