FreeBSD 8.0 is out…

… and I wasted about 14 hours of my life doing nothing more than playing around with it. Sure, I thought I was doing something productive… I was going to compile a static build of Murmur for FreeBSD.

Because we’ve got nothing for home FreeBSD machines except a few POS systems like Celerons and a VIA C7-D, I decided to chuck 8.0 on a VM on my desktop and start compiling QT4 libraries as static libraries… so away I went.

Fast forward quite a ways into the process and I realized… there’s a damn good chance that an 8.0 binary won’t even run on 7.2 – which is what all our production machines are. A quick check with my friendly neighborhood FreeBSD boffins confirmed it – so I nuked the VM and started again with 7.2. :(
