It’s just extra skin!

Sunday, January 10th, 2010

People tend to like it when I rant, so I figured I’d indulge the folks out there with a rant about something pretty bloody important to roughly 50% of the population out there… the penis, or more specifically one very specific portion of it.

When we found ourselves pregnant, my wife and I talked about all different kinds of scenarios and one of them we discussed was if we were to have a boy, would he be circumcised? My wife was pretty well indifferent on the subject, and I was close to, but I leaned in the direction of preferring not to do it.

Why? Well for one thing, it’s not fuckin’ reversible. I figure if our kid grows up and hates his foreskin in the future, or in the (incredibly unlikely, where we live) event he wants to marry an orthodox jewish girl, he can make the decision himself. After all, it’s his dick he can cut it up however he want.

Also, despite what the first hit for google on the subject might tell you, there are almost zero proven health benefits to doing so.

I’m not bitter about it, but here’s a novel aspect of looking at it. Historically, circumcision was often done to curtail masturbation in boys. Essentially it was seen as a way of reducing sexual pleasure to curtail deviancy. There’s another group of people out there who arbitrarily mutilate a kid’s genitals to prevent deviant behavior…

… some tribesfolk do it to young girls, because they think it’ll prevent promiscuity. This is seen as a grossly inhumane practice when backwards folk cut bits off little girls for no good reason, but here in the west it’s done all the time to little boys and most parents put more thought and effort into getting a car insurance quote than they do deciding whether to mutilate their kid’s junk.

I can certainly understand trusting your doctor and taking his word on what’s best and not giving it too much thought, they were only doing what they thought was best for their kids with the information they were given. But some of the crazies out there who vehemently defend their choice are just straight up fuckin’ hilarious – here’s some of the awesome reasons my wife’s heard behind it:

  • It protects from STDs. One lady even went so far as to claim, unsourced, that uncircumcised males were 60% more likely to contract “STDs”. Not entirely sure which of the STDs happen to really, really like living under the foreskin, or who came up with the 60% figure, but any idiot that does more than 10 minutes worth of research can see there’s zero accepted evidence for this statement, or any of the other alleged health benefits.
  • They’ll get teased at school, or will feel different from other kids. I know how I was raised, and while I’m by no means an expert on parenting I fully intend to do my very best to ensure my kid understand that his penis is supposed to stay in his pants during school hours. He shouldn’t be showing his off, and he certainly shouldn’t go out of his way to look at other kids’ equipment.

Since people on this subject like to make unsubstantiated claims, I’ll throw one out too: based on my limited experiences, communal showering after PE is one of the leading causes of mental trauma amongst pubescent boys. Boys who can shower after PE without having to look at each others goods are, in my uneducated opinion, going to grow up healthier. Aren’t unsourced claims awesome?

  • Dad and boy should have matching equipment, so boy  doesn’t grow up self-conscious. What the fuck? When your kid is old enough to compare, that’s when it’s time to stop being naked around your kid. Even if you decide that cutting bits of skin off your kid’s most sensitive areas without his say-so isn’t abuse, surely showing your junk off to a kid old enough to comprehend what it is would be!

So think about that for a second, think that for any reason behind male-circumcision you can come up with, tribes-people can make the same case for allowing female-circumcision, a practice which in the west is almost universally abhorred. The practice is no more or less barbaric because of the gender it’s being done to.

More PS3 Trophies for your Buck

Sunday, January 10th, 2010

If you’re like me – “HURR I NAED TROFEEZ” – but you haven’t the cash to buy a bunch of brand new games, you’ll appreciate this list of cheap, trophy-enabled games courtesy of half.com (I checked them on PS3Trophies if I don’t have them, so don’t blame me if they don’t actually have trophy support):

* ANNOYING AS BALLS WARNING: BFBC requries you to play the game through twice to get the different difficulty trophies – this made me rage, because I’m used to playing a game through once on the hardest difficulty and collecting all the trophies at once.

Gripes about Gaming

Saturday, January 9th, 2010

So apparently some idiots on forums are touting Modern Warfare 2 as “game of the decade” (I can’t find a link, I just heard it somewhere and was so overcome with rage fits that I stopped paying attention) – where the hell do they get this stupid idea from?

I don’t think the campaign in MW2 is as great as CoD4, though admittedly the multi-player is “much improved”. That’s not saying much though, a shit sandwich probably tastes better with a bit more mayonnaise. Who would’ve thought people would have liked such gems as host-migrations, or the ability to join a friend online without waiting for party invitations.

Sure, MW2 is “flavor of the week” at the moment, and I happen to enjoy playing it online… but like I tell people all the time: it’s not a great “FPS”, but SOCOM is the benchmark for how the community/matchmaking aspect of an FPS should work. The lobby system for SOCOM 3 and Combined Assault is almost flawless. With Confrontation the clan system is great and the clan match calendar is sensible.

…and it’s awesome how if you’re offline (say, a kid at school) you can set up clan events and matches, and recruit folks, all from any web browser.

Yet you’ve got the XBL-playing fratboy assholes jerking off over the “much improved” multiplayer of MW2. :(

My personal vote for GotD would have to be either Half Life 2, or Team Fortress 2 – but I admit I’m a little biased. :)

Recovering from Christmas

Friday, January 8th, 2010

To answer everyone’s question at once: we had a pretty merry Christmas.

Money was a bit tight, we mostly got crap for the little kids and the forthcoming baby. Sabriena and I pretty much agreed not to exchange gifts, in favor of keeping our credit card balance low, she didn’t get any gifts for me and I didn’t get any gifts for her.

Okay that’s not entirely true, she found a pair of toe-socks she wanted and then we bought the Pirates of the Caribbean DLC for LittleBigPlanet.

Sabrienix was doing “meh” – I think we had the double-whammy of TS3′s beta release, which sucked away a few paying customers, and people wanting to spend money on christmas instead which made  a good few people late on their invoices. It’s starting to recover now, and we’re getting a lot of interest in Mumble 1.2 which is awesome.

We’re hopefully looking at starting our brand new web-hosting line, I’ll have more details about that later when we’re closer to release. :D

I hate snow sometimes. :(

Thursday, January 7th, 2010

You really couldn’t complain about the weather here today, considering we were supposed to have a horrendous “winter storm” that’s supposed to last two days. It was in the 20s, but it felt great outside.

I went out to split a few pieces of the thicker wood, because it burns better for longer periods than the thinner logs… and they were all covered in snow. I lost the wedges in the snow a couple of times, and my shoes are wet.

I shoveled the path to the driveway, against my better judgment, because traipsing through the snow left my shoes wet. I was going to shovel the driveway, but we only had about 6″ of snow on the ground, and the only person leaving was my brother in law who has a4WD anyway… I bet we’ll get more snow tonight so I’ll just shovel it tomorrow.

The roads are slick, and as usual there’s the usual batch of idiots who despite having lived here their entire lives, don’t have a damn clue how to drive. They speed down the street, full acceleration – you know their speedo is reporting about 5mph faster than their car is actually travelling.

They speed down the street, effectively panic-braking at the stop sign, only to skate straight through it. Oh well, no harm no foul, no one else was at the intersection so what could go wrong?

There’s the usual tell-tale skidmarks on the ice… weird fish shapes, ellipticals, ovals, dogs-legs, all the kinds of markings to show that folks probably aren’t driving as slow as they probably should in these conditions.

In fact now that I think about it, it’s not the snow that I hate – it’s the way people act in it.

World’s Greatest Detective!

Thursday, January 7th, 2010

So last night I finally got done with Batman: Arkham Asylum enough to walk my ass the marathon distance involved in actually giving it back. I farmed the last few trophies associated with solving all the riddles, the last 40% or so of which I had to look up on the internet, because I foolishly managed to miss a couple of the secrets maps.

The ones where you had to line up the question marks certainly had me going quite a bit until I figured out the trick to solving them – find a piece of it, then start from the furthest point away and keep looking for more of it. :(

The ending is great, though a little aggravating. I like the comic book style, and how everything’s bright and colorful, not entirely unlike what I imagine las vegas hotels to be.

Overall I found it substantially more fun than Star Wars: Force Unleashed. I’ll rant about that another day.

Batman: Arkham Asylum

Monday, January 4th, 2010

So I just got done with Batman: Arkham Asylum earlier, and I’ve gotta say I really enjoyed this game. It reminds me a lot of X-Men Origins: Wolverine, but that could be just because it uses the same engine for about the same purposes.

The atmosphere is great – when I first saw it I thought it was supposed to be The Dark Knight version, but it’s actually based off the comic books. The asylum is rendered beautifully, and you don’t really ever feel like there’s an invisible barrier keeping you in the environment.

The combat works almost flawlessly, and the thugs and various enemies are all sufficiently varied that it doesn’t seem unreasonable – I suppose the asylum inmate uniform probably lends something to that.

The boss battles are genius for the most part, the game walked me through each one on “Normal” difficulty providing a challenging experience without me feeling like it was holding my hand through it.

Now for the bad parts…

Though the environment is rendered beautifully and works well within the confines of the game engine, it’s not terribly dynamic. A grate that you kick or pull off the wall will lay around on the floor, and any touch you give it no matter how stealthily you’re moving will make a heinous clanking noise. But bump into the lightest-appearing of medical equipment and you’ll find it’s as if it’s welded to the floor.

The “DLC” thus far isn’t much, but it’s all free from what I can see. Mostly it’s just additions in the challenge modes, more familiar maps – nothing really new except the ability to play as the Joker.

Finally, the experience isn’t really random. I watched my brother in law play the “Killer Croc’s lair” and Croc attacks at all the same points – all the enemy spawn locations are all identical.

Other than that though, I really enjoyed it.

Homebrew Aquarium Filter

Friday, January 1st, 2010

My wife has a soft-shell turtle named “Duck” – you can see photos of him on our Flickr. A while back we switched to sand instead of gravel for his substrate – the result of which has made his little setup hell on filters.

We had the “water-wheel” type of filter, which didn’t last more than about a month before the bushing on the impeller went out… we replaced it, and it lasted about another month. We bought one of the in-tank filters designed for marine aquariums, and it lasted about six months.

We’ve been looking at pool/spa filters, but the pumps to drive them aren’t cheap – so now I’m thinking about trying to homebrew one using a sealed “paint” bucket, a fountain pump and some kind of foam media. I’m thinking if the pump is below the media, and can provide enough suction in the bucket, and I prime the bucket with water, it should work alright as long as it’s serviced often enough.

Anyone happen to be familiar with designing these kinds of setups?
